Constructed almost entirely from local wood and stone, by local craftsmen externally the Alila Jabal Akhdar is at once entirely of its natural surroundings and boldly geometric.
Offering breathtaking views of the Al Hajar Mountains, this hotel is a monastic blend of Omani architecture and zen aesthetics. The hotel offers 86 rooms, each with straight-from-the-souk treasure finds and local crafts. Yet, the atmosphere is calm and uncluttered with neutral tones, dark woods, and incredible panoramas (have I mentioned that) that extend the rooms. Common areas, with decorative features like metal grilles and damask roses, trays of coffee and dates add a traditional touch, while outside, interlinked courtyards, corridors, and shaded gardens create a souq-like hub that guides you to the hotel’s highlights.
The dining experience at the two on-site restaurants is a delectable journey into local and international cuisine. The Juniper Restaurant serves as the hotel’s main dining venue, offering a menu that pays tribute to the style of cooking in the mountain regions. Fresh, seasonal produce is transformed into vibrant, flavourful dishes, from traditional Omani staples to internationally influenced recipes. Rose Lounge provides a more casual setting, where guests can enjoy a variety of beverages and light bites while soaking in the panoramic views.
The rooms at Alila Jabal Akhdar Hotel exude an understated elegance. Since the property is all-suites, even the standard rooms are a good size. The minimalist decor is rustic chic with ethnic Omani elements like fort-like solid wood doors, copper plates, and locally made clay pottery. Hand-painted murals of Juniper trees, which grow in this region, decorate the walls. The rooms, warm, earthy tones, open onto balconies that offer jaw-dropping views of the canyon or the gardens. Our room was called Mountain View Suite, (room 26), a standard room at 52 square metres. There was nothing standard about the view! It overlooks the infinity pool and gorge, with a gorgeous private terrace. The en-suite bathrooms are spacious and equipped with luxurious amenities, providing the perfect place to unwind after a day of gorge walking.
A highlight of the Alila Jabal Akhdar experience is undoubtedly the Spa Alila. Reflecting the harmony of nature, the spa is a tranquil oasis offering a blend of Asian healing techniques and age-old beauty recipes. The spa’s seven treatment rooms, including a Vichy shower room and private courtyards, provide an intimate and peaceful environment. The spa offers a variety of treatments, from signature massages to traditional facials, all designed to rejuvenate the mind, body, and spirit.
What makes Spa Alila stand out is its commitment to creating unique wellness journeys for its guests. An example is their bespoke spa treatment, where guests can learn how to craft their body scrub. Under the expert guidance of an “alchemist”, guests begin the process by choosing a base of sea salt, Himalayan salt, rice, or oats. This is followed by selecting from a variety of herbs and spices indigenous to Oman. The experience culminates in a personalized treatment that uses the crafted body scrub, leaving guests feeling refreshed and invigorated.
